We had portaged from East Bearskin Lake to Moon Lake after a 4 mile canoe paddle. The portage was only 118 rods but it was through dense forest and muddy creek bottoms. Back at our lodge the owner told us that some 50 inch pike were being pulled out of this small 30 foot deep lake. I was planning on hooking into one of the monsters and I have always used Mepps spinners for large tophy muskies and pike. In between two large trees, it made a window or casting opurtunity so I took it. Before the lure even hit the water this smallmouth had the Mepps in its mouth.
