I always like to spend the last few days of trout season plying the local waters near my home. The afternoon was cool and breezy, with occasional sun to brighten things up. The brook trout were in their vivid Fall spawning colors as I began to cast my favorite Mepps ultra-lite spinner along undercut banks and into deep holes along the Boardman River. The trout are wary, so the trick is to let the lure undulate in place for moments at a time until they dart out from cover to snag the offering. This particular brookie wasted no time in smashing the spinner and then darting back to cover. I gently pulled him back out into the stream for the balance of the struggle and after snapping a few quick photos was able to release the fish unharmed to grow into the next season. These Mepps Ultra-lite spinners, dressed with flies, are my preferred lure of choice when fishing the small and remote backwoods streams of Michigan.
