I was at the river fishing for Smallmouth, and I noticed that I'd get soft thumps on my lures. Then in the current I'd see some pops on the surface, and then realized that trout were there. I was very surprised, because from what I had read, that stretch of the river was a popular Smallmouth location. The water was for sure cool enough for trout, so the next thing to do was catch one! I had been using different Mepps spinners, but I hadn't beenishing very long so I had my whole Mepps collection ready to use. On my third lure I picked the #3 Comet TRU-V Firetiger/Black Spinner and that did the trick! I made a very nice cast off to my left and then let the current carry it a bit, then I started a slow, but consistent retrieve, and as the current carried my lure out in front of me and about 25 yards out, BAM! The fish hit. It didn't move much at first, and then I felt the head shakes, and heavy resistance due to the current. It took a bit to get the trout in. With my trusty old school "Gimpy" net as I call it, I scooped the trout up and was super excited. I got it measured and then carefully released it back into the river. I'm happy I picked the Comet TRU-V to use, and I'm a firm believer in the effectiveness of this lure series by Mepps! With the stained water, the Firetiger color was the perfect choice! Highly visible in the stained water the Trout spotted it easily and went for it!
